The recent Cricket Test season ended with the last playing day being washed out. Ironically South Africa had been praying for rain and they got some, lots of it too but instead of it raining by the Cape of Storms it fell upon their cricket team in New Zealand. The Proteas were the big movers in the season too climbing the ranking positions from 7th to 2nd and collecting a handy cheque from the ICC.
However the 4-Test series between India and Australia was where it got really hot. Midway through Australia were one up, then later going into the 4th Test it was all level. Without their maestro captain Kohli, having already confirmed their number one ranking position and receiving the ICC mace along with a $1, 000,000.00 prize by being the top side come 1st April, they turned around an amazing performance with bat and ball. Deservedly India won and it was sheer guts and glory. But for Australia it was close but no cigar. They will be licking their wounds and will emerge as challengers again soon. Their luck further deteriorated when on the final day they got pipped for 2nd place and ended up above England in 3rd position.
Sri Lanka suffered a surprise loss to Bangladesh in Colombo, and now the Tigers (66pts) are seriously challenging the West Indies (69pts) for the 8th spot. How the mighty have fallen and can the Windies be a force again? Perhaps only time will tell, and that being as soon as next month.
The next Test starts Friday 21 April 2017, Pakistan at Kingston. This 3-Test series is probably the best time for the Caribbean’s to play the recent former number one team. Pakistan still don’t play any matches at home and have lost a number of players to betting and match fixing. Swear words in global sport, blasphemy to a side if all fit and accountable are worthy of the number one position, as they showed last year. Nevertheless for the Windies this may be their Watergate moment to regroup, play good 5-Day Test cricket and start to climb away from their losing streak and up the ladder. Whether they can string two good innings together in a game remains to be seen i.e. batting for 125 overs twice at 3 runs per over and amassing 750+ runs.
Well that’s 23 days to the next Test, the IPL takes centre stage and then followed by the ICC Championship Tournament in England during June. Hopefully when the Tests resume after the shorter formats the crowd will be hungry to watch the purist’s game and English paceman James Anderson will be happy with the number of bums on seats.
Other upcoming Tests beyond the ICC fixture include Pakistan hosting Bangladesh for 2-Tests and South Africa touring England in a 4-Test series. Finally Zimbabwe get some action, they follow the Tigers to Sri Lanka. Can The Chevrons from Zimbabwe upset the Lions in Sri Lanka? It will be a tough task for them. Their last action was in November 2016 against the same opponents, they will be praying it rains runs and wickets. For the Slankans they will be hoping for the same no doubt.
